Burray and Hope Schools are two primary schools which are situated on the islands of Burray and
South Ronaldsay respectively. Both
schools are found in the centre of small villages and serve a rural population.
The islands are
unique as they are separated from the Orkney mainland by the Churchill
Barriers. These are unique man-made
barriers which were built largely by Italian prisoners of war in WW2 as part of
an initiative to protect the Royal Navy boats in and around Orkney after the
sinking of the Royal Oak in Scapa Flow by the German U-Boat U-47 on 14th
October 1939. Construction was ordered
by the then First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill. The barriers were not officially opened until
12 May 1945, four days after the end of WW2 in Europe.
Both schools enjoy outdoor activities and are active in keeping these
beautiful islands clean by engaging in beach cleaning sessions and other
“green” activities.
